Hiep + Van // Australia Wedding // Part I

What can I possibly say about Hiep + Van's wedding in Perth that could even remotely do it justice? It was an amazing day filled with love, family, tradition, ceremony, incredible food, lots of drinking, toasting, dancing, and many many photos. I am so humbled that they wanted me to be there to document it. First up, Part I, the Vietnamese ceremony where the two families come together.

Australia

Back in April I had the incredible honor of traveling halfway around the world to shoot Hiep & Van's wedding, which I will be posting tomorrow, so please come back and check it out. It was epic. Even though I carried four cameras around Australia for nearly three weeks before the wedding, somehow I managed to take not very many photos. But here are a few from my first couple days in Sydney, where I reunited with an old friend who I hadn't seen in ten years and who so generously put me up and toured me around. It was great fun and Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited.

From there I flew to Melbourne, where I stayed with a previous bride, Natalia. Melbourne was probably my favorite city I visited, but I only shot film there and I haven't gotten that processed yet. From there, I flew to Perth and caught up with some more friends, pretty much all of whom I met at Natalia & Mat's wedding in Brazil. It was great to catch up with Mat's family and I went with his sisters to Fremantle one day. Australians are for sure some of the most generous and hospitable folks in the world.

I spent most of the time in Perth hanging out with Hiep and Van and getting to know their families. One other thing I will say about Australians is that they certainly know how to eat. (They don't know how to drink, though. That's a myth.) I got to eat a lot of amazing home-cooked Vietnamese food, like this phở. If you ever find yourself in Perth, you can experience it for yourself at Kulcha. Do it. Seriously.

Natalia and Mat also took me to Rottnest Island one day. I didn't bring a camera since we spent the day biking and swimming, but here's one pic from my phone:

After that I headed to Bali for a few days, which will be another post of its own once I get the film back from the lab. Then I headed back to Sydney and stayed with another couple whose wedding I shot, Emily and Jeff. It was so great being able to catch up with them during their year abroad and I'm so lucky to count so many past clients among my friends. But I had the best time in Australia and I really can't wait to get back there. Next time I promised to take Tully to her namesake town in Queensland. Please come back tomorrow for Hiep and Van's Wedding photos. It's gonna be a long post, it was an amazing day.
